Let Your Man Be A Man by Mike Muson
I have many friends that are women (I call them “friendgirls” instead of my girlfriends) and many of them are amazing, independent, funny and successful women that somehow have a difficult time finding or keeping a man in their lives. What many of them struggle with is balancing that highly confident and competent personality that has afforded them a great deal of success in their professional life with what men are looking for in relationships.
Please don’t misunderstand. There is nothing more attractive to an empowered man than a woman who is going to be just as empowered and capable as he is. However, there’s a subtle component to a man’s nature that often is overlooked by strong women. Men need to feel important and necessary to their partner. Bottom line, men want and need to feel needed. If a woman can do everything on her own, why would she need a man around?
Deeply embedded in every man’s psyche is a desire to provide for and help his partner. This can manifest itself in both large ways (taking you out for an elegant dinner or a relaxing vacation) and very subtle ways (reaching that can of soup on the shelf that you can’t get to or fixing a lamp that’s broken). It makes us feel like a man when we can do something for our woman to make her life better. Often, empowered women are so used to showing how independent they are (which makes them successful in business) that they don’t allow their man to show his appreciation of her by providing for her.
People didn’t have to consider this back in the early days of romance as roles were more clearly defined. However, in 2010 with women becoming just as much a part of the business world as men, a reminder of these gender specific codings is helpful. Men want you to be the most successful and fulfilled person that you can be, but we also want to feel necessary and important to you. So the next time you are unloading your groceries and your man offers to help, just let him… even if you could manage it on your own.
